The city of Reno is calling on residents to provide their input on live entertainment regulations through a series of virtual community meetings and an online survey. The feedback collected will be presented at a future Reno City Council meeting to guide potential changes to zoning code regulations.

At a council meeting on June 11, city staff outlined the current zoning code standards for live entertainment. The council directed staff to gather community input on topics such as security plans, the public hearing process, enforcement, and overall effectiveness before making any recommendations.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “We understand that live entertainment is a top priority for local businesses looking to provide more engaging experiences for their customers. It’s important that our community members share their perspectives on the matter, and we encourage everyone to participate in these virtual feedback meetings.”

The regulations have evolved over time, leading to inconsistencies between older and newer venues. Older bars and nightclubs often offer unrestricted live entertainment, while newer venues must adhere to rules outlined in a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). Live entertainment activities include singing, dancing, trivia nights, and karaoke.

Key topics for feedback include whether the CUP requirement for live entertainment after 11 p.m. should be modified, the necessity of security plans for such events, and whether stricter enforcement measures should be implemented for violations.

The virtual meetings are scheduled for Monday, September 29 at 9 a.m., Tuesday, September 30 at 12 p.m., and Tuesday, October 2 at 6 p.m.
