Nancy Wilson, welcome to the “Pink Pony Club.”
The legendary Heart guitarist made a surprise appearance at Chappell Roan’s Sunday, Sept. 21 show at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, N.Y. and fans weren’t disappointed.
The “Hot to Go!” singer on her Visions of Damsels and Other Dangerous Things pop-up tour brought out the 71-year-old guitar legend to join her and her band on the 1977 Heart classic “Barracuda.” Although Roan frequently covers the song in her live set, having the song’s co-writer and original guitarist on stage to play her parts was a special moment that wasn’t lost on fans.
A few fan-shot videos of the rare collaboration were posted on YouTube and fans reacted in the comments.
“This is so cool, love Heart and to see those ladies get homage is amazing,” one fan wrote.
“71 and kicking ass!” another fan added, referring to Nancy Wilson’s age.
“Nancy is as great as ever and not a bad cover too. But I wonder why Nancy left the stage so quickly once it was done,” another posted.
At least one fan, however, was missing Nancy’s older sister, Heart singer Ann Wilson. “not even close to being on Ann’s level,” they wrote.
Yet another remarked that Nancy Wilson is from a different era, when female artists dressed differently than today’s pop stars.
“Nancy Wilson standing there disassociating to a time when women artists didn’t have to show their ass to be interesting,” they wrote.
In the clip, Roan, 27, is decked out in a revealing bustier, with a thong-like back, and high black boots, while Nancy Wilson, armed with her trademark purple guitar, is fully clothed in a black outfit, with flowing white strands of fabric and purple boots.
This isn’t the first time that the new generation of female performers have embraced Heart. Back in May, Ann Wilson released an episode of her podcast, After Dinner Thinks, featuring Roan and Lucy Dacus, solo artist and a member of the indie supergroup Boygenius with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers.
However, the conversation took a strange turn when Dacus bluntly asked the “Magic Man” singer, “Are you a witch?”
Realizing she may have made a misstep, Dacus suggested that the question should be cut from the recording, but Ann Wilson was OK with it and continued to address the question.
“Well, I never claimed to be one or felt I was one,” Ann Wilson added. “If you have power over people without trying, I think that’s a form of witchery or what you want to call it.”
“You definitely do,” Dacus responded. “I saw it tonight,” referring to a Heart performance back in March at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, when the podcast was taped.
