Supernatural starsJared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who famously played demon-hunting brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, are sharing some behind-the-scenes moments in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the show’s pilot episode.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly in September 2025, alongside Misha Collins, who played angel Castiel, Padalecki and Ackles shared one spooky moment from set. When the actors were asked, “Which filming location was the most haunted?” Ackles was quick to respond, “Riverview [Hospital]” located in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Collins chimed in that the location was “A decommissioned mental asylum from, like, back in the 1950s.”
Ackles then shared that the cast asked the facility’s liaison for a proper tour of the defunct hospital. According to the Boys actor, the liaison shared an unsettling story.
“We finally got ahold of the liaison of the facility and we were like, ‘We want to tour the place, like for real.’ And she was like, ‘Well, we can’t go to the fourth floor.’ And we were all like, ‘We’re going to the fourth floor’ … She took us up there and she was like, ‘This is the staircase that I got pushed down,'” said Ackles during the Entertainment Weekly interview.
According to Ackles, the liaison said that “nobody else was here” when she was pushed.
“‘I was doing the rounds by myself.’ She’s like, ‘I won’t go into this room.’ And we all walk in and hang out. But, yeah, apparently just grossly haunted, that place. There were some other ones, too, but that one takes the cake,” said Ackles to the publication.
Padalecki also recalled that the liaison “was so matter-of-fact about it” in her retelling of the story.
Jensen Ackles Shared How Playing Dean Winchester Has Impacted His View of the Supernatural
Ackles played Dean, who is an expert on defeating supernatural creatures, during the show’s 15-season run, which aired from 2005 to 2020. While recording an August 2025 interview on actor Michael Rosenbaum‘s podcast, Inside of You, Ackles shared he has some unearned confidence about battling anything that goes bump in the dark.
“I have 15 years of training. And it’s given me a horribly false sense of security around anything that could possibly be supernatural. And so if there’s a bump in the night, in my mind, it’s not like, ‘Oh my god. What was that?’ In my mind, it’s like ‘You picked the wrong house, motherf—-r,'” quipped Ackles, causing Rosenbaum to laugh.
