Lisa Marie Presley’s mother is convinced her father, Elvis, and son Benjamin Keough “were there to see her over” following her passing.
The singer-songwriter and sole child of the King of Rock and Roll tragically passed away at age 54 in January 2023.
At the time, reports indicated that Lisa Marie had experienced cardiac arrest at her Calabasas, California, residence and was transported to the hospital after her pulse returned.
However, later that same day, her devastated mother, Priscilla, made the agonizing choice to disconnect the life support equipment that had been sustaining Lisa Marie.
Now, in her latest memoir, Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis, Priscilla, 80, has revealed details about the devastating moment and her belief that her former husband, Elvis, and Lisa’s son, Benjamin, ushered her into the afterlife.
Nevertheless, the Presley family wasn’t prepared to say goodbye, with Lisa Marie’s half-brother, Navarone Garibaldi Garcia, immediately being rushed into the medical room to be beside his sister. It was at this moment that Navarone inquired when Lisa Marie would begin breathing again, with a physician explaining it could take two minutes.
While some family members exited the room, Priscilla and Danny Keough, Lisa Marie’s former husband, stayed behind, gently caressing her hands and face while expressing their deep love for her.
Tragically, mere moments after Priscilla stepped out of the room, an emergency alert sounded – indicating that Lisa Marie’s heart had ceased beating, causing Priscilla to collapse into the embrace of her cousin, Ivy. Lisa Marie’s heart was successfully restarted, though there was no assurance she would achieve stability, with Priscilla documenting that she might remain “lying in a vegetative state for the rest of her life.”
At that moment, she reached the difficult decision to “say goodbye”.
“I said what I had to, ‘take her off the machine, doctor,'” Priscilla documented. She reveals that although she has no recollection of it, she collapsed backward as the nurse began removing the equipment that assisted Lisa Marie’s breathing.
However, Priscilla, despite her devastating grief, found comfort knowing that Lisa hadn’t been alone during her transition to the afterlife.
She wrote: “Riley and I knew that Lisa’s heart had really stopped beating the day Benjamin died. I like to believe that her son and her father were there to see her over. I need to believe that my girl is not alone.”
Benjamin passed away at age 27 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was discovered by authorities at his California residence on July 12, 2020.
At the time, Lisa Marie’s representative said she was “beyond devastated” and was trying to stay strong for her remaining children. During his final public outing before his passing, he appeared alongside his family at the 40th commemoration of Elvis’ death, at a memorial service held at Graceland.
Lisa Marie preserved his body at her residence, using dry ice. Riley Keough revealed that her mother made this choice so Benjamin remained “in her control” as the globe was consumed by the coronavirus outbreak.
“She didn’t want his body to be somewhere where people could mess with it,” she said.
She secured assistance from an understanding mortician to transport Benjamin’s remains to her residence and needed to maintain the room where he was housed at 55 degrees, and she felt “fortunate” to be able to continue caring for him while she contemplated whether his permanent resting place should be the family’s Graceland property or in Hawaii.
Lisa Marie penned in her own autobiography, published after her passing: “That was part of why it took so long. I got so used to him, caring for him and keeping him there. I think it would scare the living f——- p— out of anybody else to have their son there like that. But not me. I felt so fortunate that there was a way that I could still parent him, delay it a bit longer so that I could become okay with laying him to rest.”
