Jimmy Kimmel returned to late-night television by stepping out to a one-minute standing ovation.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” returned to the airwaves on Tuesday, Sept. 23, a day after Disney announced that it reached the decision to allow the comedian back on ABC. The show did not air in some markets after Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group said they would continue to preempt the show.
The audience, on their feet, cheered and clapped as Kimmel returned following a suspension of nearly a week. He began his monologue by joking, “Anyway, as I was saying before I was interrupted.”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was suspended ‘indefinitely’ by Disney on Sept. 17 over comments Kimmel made about conservative host and activist Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer. Prior to Disney’s decision, both Sinclair and Nexstar announced that Kimmel would be taken off the air at ABC affiliate stations.
Kimmel addressed the comments he made previously that led to his show being taken off air.
“It was never my intention to make light of the murder a young man,” Kimmel said. “Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what was a deeply disturbed individual. That was the opposite of the point I was trying to make.”
