Michael Hirst has confirmed details about his upcoming Amazon Prime Video series Bloodaxe. The creator, known for Vikings, hinted that the new historical drama will revisit the Norse world with a fresh timeline, introducing figures like Egil Skallagrímsson and Erik Bloodaxe as central characters in the saga.

Michael Hirst indicated that Bloodaxe does not serve as a direct sequel to Vikings. The series unfolds about a century after Ragnar Lodbrok’s era. It bridges the historical gap between Vikings, set in the 9th century, and Vikings: Valhalla, set in the 11th century, as per MovieWeb.
Hirst told MovieWeb, “Bloodaxe is one of the last great Viking leaders who believed in the old ways and the old gods. And his adventures are quite extraordinary. He became King of Norway… He went and ruled York, he went and ruled Ireland, and he had a beautiful and wonderful, magical wife called Gunnhild. Their adventures are at the core of this.”
The creator noted that although he initially thought his time with Norse sagas had ended, he was drawn back by characters like Egil Skallagrímsson. Hirst further stated, “Egil was a pathological killer, but he was also, and more importantly, the greatest poet that Scandinavia ever produced.” “He is called one of the founding fathers of Iceland,” Hirst said. Actor Karlis Arnolds Avots plays Egil, who will seek revenge against Bloodaxe, portrayed by Xavier Molyneux.
Notably, Hirst is co-writing the series with his son, Horatio, in his writing debut. Amazon Prime Video will most likely release it in 2026, produced by MGM Television with multiple executive producers.
As per the synopsis, the series focuses on Erik Bloodaxe and Gunnhild “as they fight for the throne of Norway,” with rivals, shifting loyalties, and English rulers entering the conflict. Hirst emphasized his commitment to historical accuracy, stating, “There’s very little I ever write that is not true in inverted commas. It is a result of research, and even the most blatantly strange things are usually true in one sense or another.”
Meanwhile, audiences can stream Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix now, and Prime Video will debut Bloodaxe in 2026.
