Sarah McLachlan was the musical guest on the Tuesday, September 23rd return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to air. The late-night appearance came just days after she refused to perform at a concert in an act of solidarity over the host’s recent suspension, citing the need to support free speech.
While seated at a piano, McLachlan delivered an emotional rendition of the title track from her new album, Better Broken. She did not speak on the broadcast outside of the performance. Watch a replay below.

On Sunday, McLachlan pulled out of a concert tied to the Hollywood premiere of a new Lilith Fair documentary being distributed by ABC News Studios and streamed on Disney+ and Hulu. After Jewel and surprise guest Olivia Rodrigo also refused to perform, the concert was canceled.

During her introduction for Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, McLachlan explained her decision:
“I’ve grappled with being here tonight and around what to say about the present situation that we are all faced with, the stark contraction to the many advances we’ve made watching the insidious erosion of women’s rights, of trans and queer rights, the muzzling of free speech… I know you’re expecting a performance tonight, and I’m so grateful to all of you for coming, and I apologize if this is disappointing, but we have collectively decided not to perform but instead to stand in solidarity in support of free speech.”
Earlier in the episode, Kimmel delivered an emotional monologue pushing back against FCC pressure over comments he made surrounding Charlie Kirk’s murder. Many supporters from both sides of the aisle believed his comments were misconstrued in an attempt to silence a prominent critic of Donald Trump.
McLachlan is currently on the Canadian leg (get tickets here) of her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th anniversary tour. Following that run, she’ll embark on a nine-date US “Better Broken Tour.” A Live Nation pre-sale for the US shows begins on Thursday, September 25th, followed by the general on-sale on Friday, September 26th via Ticketmaster.
