Darius Rucker is stepping back into the world of rock, but it won’t be with Hootie and the Blowfish.
Instead, the star singer is slated to team up with R.E.M. co-founder Mike Mills and The Black Crowes drummer and co-founder Steve Gorman to form a super group — Howl Owl Howl — and they already have a single on the way and a tour planned.
According to People Magazine, the single — “My Cologne” — is slated to drop on Oct. 31. Meanwhile, the tour is slated to start at The Vogue in Indianapolis, Indiana on Nov. 3.
“It feels great to be singing with a rock band again,” Rucker said. “It’s like buddies getting together, but also getting to play with your idols. The stuff we’re writing is so different than anything I’ve tried to do before.”
According to People, Howl Owl Howl “fuses organic roots rock with an open-minded alternative flair, matching a fluid, feel-oriented rhythm section to the barrel-chested vocal rasp of an iconic frontman.”
“You can never explain band chemistry,” Mills said. “We all like each other. And we all admire each other musically. All those things come together and if it weren’t fun, we wouldn’t be doing it.”
“There’s not a single guarantee,” Gorman said. “We’re finally going to get to play in and let it rip a little bit.”
While Howl Owl Howl might be new to fans, the group has reportedly been getting together for jam sessions since 2021.
The band does currently have a show scheduled for Pennsylvania with a Nov. 12 stop planned for Philadelphia.
