After earning three Oscar nominations for her 2021 directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal is making her return to the screen. Her new film, The Bride, is inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein and the 1935 film, Bride of Frankenstein.
“Thrilled (and a little terrified) to give you a peek at my new baby,” Gyllenhaal wrote about The Bride. “Here we go. Are you ready??”

What is The Bride about?
Here’s the film’s official synopsis, per Variety:
“A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.”
Who is in the cast?
Jessie Buckley stars as the titular bride of Frankenstein, while Christian Bale plays Frankenstein’s monster. Additional cast members include Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Penélope Cruz, Annette Bening, and Julianne Hough.
At this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Buckley described The Bride, saying, “It’s like Bonnie and Clyde and Wild at Heart and all those characters, but ours has petrol in its skin and we’re holding a match to it.” She also called it “the punkest love that’s ever existed.”
When does The Bride come out?
The Bride will be released in theaters on March 6, 2026.
