“The Daily Show” host Jordan Klepper on Thursday suggested why Lindsey Halligan’s appointment as acting U.S. attorney in Virginia’s Eastern District ― the office that just indicted former FBI director James Comey ― could ironically end up working in Comey’s favor.
Comey faces one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice. President Donald Trump this month railed at Attorney General Pam Bondi for not going after his political foes, including Comey.
Halligan has a startling lack of experience, no history of prosecuting and many prosecutors doubt that there is even a case against Comey, said Klepper.
“So, the bad news is Trump continues to appoint people to positions they’re completely unqualified for,” Klepper said. “But the good news is Trump continues to appoint people to positions they are completely unqualified for. In other words, don’t worry James Comey, you don’t have to learn how to make toilet hooch just yet.”
The segment then cut to correspondent Troy Iwata “reporting” from outside the Justice Department. Iwata deadpanned he was “kind of rooting for” Halligan because her improbable rise triggered “my American love for an underdog” and gave him “Legally Blonde” vibes.
