The final scene in House of Guinness season one features an assassination attempt—or is it a successful assassination? After Patrick Cochrane (Seamus O’Hara) returns from his exile in America, he is determined to get revenge on the Guinnesses.
As Arthur (Anthony Boyle) holds a campaign rally, Ellen Cochrane (Niamh McCormack) arrives at early to warn Edward (Louis Patridge) that his brother is in danger. The final scene sees Arthur delivering a campaign speech as Patrick pulls out a gun, and aims. He shoots, the bullet leaves the chamber, and it fades to black. “I have an unfair advantage because I know what happens,” says Anthony Boyle. “Steven told me. No one else knows.”

House of Guinness creator Steven Knight tells T&C, however, “I still don’t know where the bullet goes.” He wants audiences to speculate on who may die. “They’re welcome to, and if they come up with any great ideas, they should write to me,” he says. “But no, but we’re very confident about series two. So when I start that, I’m going to think, in other words, the destination of the bullet will be very influential on what this series.”
Louis Patridge, who plays Edward, says he has no clue as to the bullet’s destination. “While I wouldn’t want it to happen, this is what Edward would want happen. Edward would want that Ellen gets shot—because then he can mourn it. He can mourn his girlfriend, but it takes care of that problem. And that is that ruthless, business-minded version of Edward. He would think he can grieve it, but it can be swept under the rug and she dies for a noble cause and she’s a martyr, but he doesn’t have to deal with it. It was really harsh, but that’s what I was thinking when I was playing him, that has got potentially a piece missing in him—some social part of him isn’t fully developed.”
Despite Knight denying he knows who dies, Boyle insists that he knows the ending. “Obviously I can’t say anything, but I think it’s a great cliffhanger,” the actor says. “The whole series is building toward it and I think it leaves you wantin’ more.” Does his character Arthur Guinness die? Boyle won’t answer, and says audiences shouldn’t look up how the real Arthur Guinness dies. “Don’t Google anything because we go so far off and beaten track of what’s reality anyway, that anything could happen is what I’m saying. Anyone can get it!”
