Oliver ‘Recognizes the Damage He Did’ to Josh — But Can He Fix It?

The most pressing question, coming out of Brilliant Minds‘ Season 2 premiere: What the heck happens to make Dr. Oliver Wolf a patient at Hudson Oaks in six months’ time?

The second most pressing question, particularly to those fans invested in Wolf’s love life: Will Wolf and Dr. Josh Nichols (played by Teddy Sears) be able to rebuild their romantic relationship after Wolf really let Nichols down at the end of Season 1?

Ahead of Monday’s episode (10/9c, NBC), we took that question to series star/producer Zachary Quinto. Oliver “recognizes the damage he did,” he said. “He is more cognizant of his own limitations at the beginning of the second season.” Then he teased an event that will have a major impact on the on-again, off-again couple in the weeks to come — read on to hear what he had to say.

TVLINE | I love Wolf and Nichols. At the start of the season, Nichols seems a little bit more understanding than maybe I expected him to be, coming off of Oliver’s standing him up at the gala. But he’s also putting pretty clear boundaries out there. Is Oliver cognizant of those boundaries? How is he feeling about Josh as we move forward?

ZACHARY QUINTO | Well, it’s not a clear situation. There’s a lot of feelings that weren’t fully explored. At the end of the first season, Oliver had a choice to make, right? Is he gonna show up for Josh and see where this new relationship is taking him? Or is he going to get pulled back into the gravitational force of his father? And obviously, that’s what he chose at the end of the first season, and we see that didn’t work out for him as well as he might have hoped. But you know, I think he recognizes the damage he did. He is more cognizant of his own limitations at the beginning of the second season.

There is an event that takes place that also radically changes the dynamic between Wolf and Josh on a daily basis at the hospital. So, the way that they interact, and the way that they strike a balance between their personal lives and their professional connection, is something that we really will explore a lot of in the first half of the season.

And, you know, to give them both credit, they are both adults. They’re both professionals. They both care deeply about their work and their patients primarily, and I think that they can hold all of it, actually. Michael [Grassi, executive producer] has done a really beautiful job of creating these flawed and imperfect characters who are able to show up and be where they are with each other emotionally, and yet still not let it get in the way of providing the best care they can for their patients — and collaborating if and when they need to, which they do this season, quite a bit.

You’re gonna see a lot of interaction between Wolf and Nichols in terms of where their journey goes, as a couple. There’s a lot to unpack.
