Studio efforts to win the box office each weekend seem like “one battle after another.”
And now, the comedic action thriller from Warner Bros., starring Academy Award-winner Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Oscar-nominee Paul Thomas Anderson, has topped the box office this weekend, collecting $22.4 million from 3,634 North American theaters over the weekend, Variety reports.
One Battle After Another added another $26.1 million internationally for a global tally of $48.5 million, the media outlet also noted.
While it only ranks No. 11 on DiCaprio’s overall box office rankings, according to Deadline, the critically acclaimed film marks director Anderson’s biggest opening of all time. The auteur, 55, is usually known for making less commercial movies, such as There Will Be Blood (2007) and Magnolia (1999).
One Battle After Another reportedly cost more than $130 million to produce and another $70 million to market. While it opened lower than DiCaprio’s penultimate project, Killers of the Flower Moon, Deadline says the outlook for weekend 2 is expected to post a significantly better hold than the Martin Scorcese-directed Apple film, which also starred Robert De Niro.
Meanwhile, One Battle After Another is original and doesn’t benefit from franchise perks like other recent Warner Bros. offerings, such as Superman and Jurassic World: Rebirth, as Variety noted on Sunday, September 28. However, the studio has also defied box office expectations this year, with commercially successful releases such as Sinners and Weapons.
Last week, one of the stars of One Battle After Anotherturned heads at the premiere due to her stunningly ageless look. In fan-captured footage from the September 21 event, Regina Hall exited a vehicle, smiling and waving at fans as she paused to pose for photographers. The longtime actress, 54, became known for her role as Brenda Meeks in the Scary Movie film series (though it wasn’t her first).
