UAB Department of Music presents fall 2025 performance calendar

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Music will present new performances by students, alumni, faculty and guest artists this season.

The Department of Music, in the College of Arts and Sciences, presents recitals and concerts each fall and spring semester. Most of the performances are free and open to the public, and held in the Hulsey Center for the Arts’ Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Wednesday, Oct. 1

UAB Music Convocation student recital, 12:20 p.m., Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. UAB music students in performance. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 7

UAB Wind Symphony and Symphony Band concert, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Directed by Sean Murray, Ph.D., and Cara Morantz, Ed.D. This dynamic concert will showcase a rich tapestry of sound, featuring powerful performances, expressive artistry and a celebration of musical excellence. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 14   

Chamber Music @ AEIVA, reception at 5:30 p.m., concert at 6 p.m., in UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, 1221 10th Ave. South. Featuring music by UAB alumnus Eric Mobley performed by the string quartet Room 1078, in honor of the AEIVA gallery exhibition “Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin‑Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art.” Free.

Thursday, Oct. 16

UAB Department of Music woodwind adjunct faculty recital, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Featuring UAB adjunct faculty who are principal players in the Alabama Symphony Orchestra: Lisa Wienhold, flute, James Sullivan, oboe, Tariq Masri, bassoon, with Kevin Chance, piano. Free.

Friday, Oct. 17

UAB Fall Choral Collage concert, 6 p.m., Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th St. South. Featuring the UAB Concert Choir, Gospel Choir and Chamber Singers led by Brian Kittredge, DMA, and Reginald Jackson, Ph.D., directors. Free.

Sunday, Oct. 19

UAB Music faculty lecture-recital: Yakov Kasman, piano, Tchaikovsky’s “Children’s Album,” 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Yakov Kasman, DMA, is a UAB Distinguished Professor and artist-in-residence. Free.

UAB Music Convocation student recital, 12:20 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Free.

Sunday, Oct. 26

UAB Jazz Ensemble in concert, 5 p.m., Carver Theatre, 1631 Fourth Ave. North. An evening of dynamic big band jazz featuring some of the finest student musicians at UAB, this high-energy concert showcases the versatility and artistry of large ensemble jazz with a powerful program of swing, funk and modern jazz selections. Directed by Steven Roberts, DMA. Free.

Saturday, Nov. 1

Faculty recital: “Lift Every Voice: An Afternoon of Spirituals” with Won Cho, DMA, baritone, and Chris Steele, DMA, piano, 7 p.m., Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. A musical tribute to the African American sacred tradition. This evocative program celebrates the enduring legacy of African American spirituals through powerful and moving works by composers including H.T. Burleigh, Margaret Bonds, Roland Hayes, Uzee Brown, Moses Hogan and more, honoring the resilience, faith and hope carried through these timeless songs. Free.

UAB Department of Music studio recital: Lena West, soprano, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. West is a student of Margaret Jackson, Ph.D. Free.

Thursday, Nov. 6

UAB Brass Ensembles recital, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Featuring UAB Trumpet Ensembles I and II, Horn Choir, Trombone Choir, and the Tuba Euphonium Ensemble. Free.

Saturday, Nov. 8 

UAB Department of Music senior recital: Claire Belcher, saxophone, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Student of Mark Allen Warren. Free.

Sunday, Nov. 9

Birmingham Art Music Alliance: 30th Anniversary Concert Series featuring cellist Craig Hultgren, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. This concert commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, in consideration of Hultgren’s significant role as a founder of the organization, champion of Alabama composers and persistent activist for new music. Hultgren performs fresh repertoire for the cello, representing directions in contemporary music from traditional to experimental, acoustic to electronic, and structured to improvisational. Free.

Monday, Nov. 10

UAB Gospel Choir Fall Concert, 7 p.m., More than Conquerors Faith Church, 1327 Dennison Ave. Southwest. Celebrating the rich and diverse traditions of gospel music while showcasing both traditional and contemporary gospel music trends. Directed by Reginald Jackson, Ph.D. Free.

Wednesday, Nov. 12

UAB Jazz Combos and Guitar Ensemble in concert, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Hear the next generation of jazz artists in a program full of creativity and improvisation. Experience the intimate side of jazz as these small groups explore a wide range of styles, from classic standards to contemporary compositions, including original arrangements and compositions by UAB students. Directed by Steven Roberts, DMA, Carlos Pino and Maria Bitran. Free.

Sunday, Nov. 16

UAB Piano Studio and Piano Ensemble in concert, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Students of the UAB Piano Studio in individual and ensemble performances. Directed by Yakov Kasman, DMA, and Tatiana Kasman. Free.

Tuesday, Nov. 18

UAB Wind Symphony and Symphony Band concert, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Jemison Concert Hall. An exhilarating evening of contemporary wind music. The bands, featuring skilled woodwind, brass and percussion musicians, will present a dynamic program that celebrates the vibrant sounds of today’s composers. Free.

Wednesday, Nov. 19

UAB Department of Music Convocation student recital, 12:20 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. UAB music students in performance. Free.

Wednesday, Nov. 19

UAB Percussion Ensembles in concert, 7 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center. The UAB Percussion Ensembles program and perform all types of literature, from ragtime to contemporary, classical to rock, classics, premieres and everything in between. Selections can feature drums only, keyboard percussion only and virtually any combination, as well as any number of performers from quartets up to the large percussion orchestra. Directed by Gene Fambrough, DMA, and Micheal Muncher. Free.

Thursday, Nov. 20

UAB Opera Scenes, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. An exciting evening of opera scenes, bringing together the best offerings, both classic and new. Directed by Lara Wilson, DMA, and Patrick Evans, D.M. Free.

Monday, Dec. 1

Christmas at the Alys, 8 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Jemison Concert Hall. This annual celebration of the season from the UAB Department of Music features UAB choral ensembles and area high school choirs. Tickets are $15, free for UAB students and senior citizens. UAB Department of Music senior recital: Joshua Thomas, trumpet, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Student of James Zingara, DMA. Free.

UAB Brass Chamber recital, 7 p.m., UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Featuring UAB brass quintets, trombone quartets and other chamber ensembles. Free.

Thursday, Dec. 4

UAB Computer Music Ensemble in concert, 7 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Music students compose original works using the latest in music and audio technology. Directed by Matthew Scott Phillips, DMA. Free.

Saturday, Dec. 6

UAB Department of Music senior recital: Tavion McCorvey, baritone, 4 p.m., UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall. Student of Patrick Evans, D.M., and Won Cho, DMA. Free.
