Kid Cudi is stepping back from the spotlight. On September 29, the rapper and singer surprised fans with a new track titled “Once”, released exclusively on SoundCloud. Alongside the release, he revealed he will be taking a break from music to focus on other creative ventures.
In a heartfelt message to fans, Cudi described the song as a parting gift for now. “This is a goodbye for now song. It was produced by myself with my homie SebastiAn addin’ extra sauce here and there. Taking a break but wanted to leave u with something special and from the heart,” he wrote. “U’ll be hearing me featured on my friends’ albums but as far as me, I gotta step into the shadows and focus on my other dreams. Ima miss y’all. But hopefully this song fills u up w joy, and motivates u to keep going. Love y’all.”

The track comes only a month after Cudi released his eleventh studio album, Free, on August 22, via Wicked Awesome and Republic Records. The pop-driven record featured singles like “Neverland,” “Grave,” and “Mr. Miracle,” with videos helmed by directors Ti West and Samuel Bayer. Despite its ambitious vision, the album debuted at No. 192 on the Billboard 200, a modest showing compared to his earlier chart-topping work.
Though Cudi did not give a timeline for his return, he made it clear this hiatus is about redirecting his energy. The 41-year-old has long expressed interest in film and television, having previously starred in projects like X (2022) and co-created the Netflix animated series Entergalactic (2022).
