Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri And Andrew Garfield On Questions ‘After The Hunt’

After the Hunt is one of the most thought-provoking movies of 2025, and the cast is very aware of that. In fact, they’ve also had questions after the Amazon MGM Studios film’s credits roll.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino from a script by Nora Garrett, as we previously reported After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield, is about “a college professor (Roberts) who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star student (Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come into the light.”

Julia Roberts on why ‘After The Hunt’ is ‘stressful’

In our cast interview for Blavity’s Shadow and Act, Roberts said of the film’s tension, “It is stressful, but I think in the most delicious way, I like this kind of unsettled feeling when I’m watching a movie because you feel alive and it’s so fun to watch it in a theater with a bunch of people because not only do you need that kinship when it’s over. Just the energy that everybody’s sharing. I mean, that’s why I think I love movies…sitting in the dark with a bunch of strangers and having a shared experience. And this movie…it needs that.”

Edebiri added, “I think the fact that you can also see a scene in this movie, and because of your own history or feelings about something or someone, or presumptions about somebody that you might not even know, you can have a completely different takeaway from the person who’s next to you. You might be like, ‘We see eye to eye on everything. And so I think I’d be interested for viewers to see what those questions are within themselves and where they might overlap or completely differ from the people who they’re seeing it with. Because that’s been one of my favorite parts about this experience is talking to friends and family members who come to see it and what their takeaways are and why, and the places where also I’m like, I was there, we made the movie, and you have an insight that is so specific, and so cool, and so different from what I think or thought or was even aware of.”

Garfield said the one question he had after the film was, “What’s in the way of me being able to fully listen to another person?”

He explained, “That’s a question that I think about. And what’s in the way of me getting to the place where I realize the truth, which is I am the other you and you are the other me, and if I hurt you, I hurt myself. And if I love you, I love myself. How do I get all of the boundaries knocked away so that can be the predominant experience of my life?”

After the Hunt is in theaters on Oct. 10 in New York and Los Angeles, before expanding on Oct. 17.
