Sister Wives star Kody Brown revealed the only reason he would add another wife to his marriage with Robyn Brown in the opening episode of the series’ 20th season.
Brown discussed taking up polygamy again after his breakups on the show with Christine Brown, Janelle Brown, and Meri Brown, with whom he was in a relationship at the same time.
His opening up about his view on the practice comes after he previously described it as “unfair.”
Kody told how he would only be open to becoming a polygamist again if he and his wife, Robyn Brown, introduced a woman into their relationship who was totally devoted to them.
He said, “I don’t mean to be salacious here, but we failed already. It was very, very painful.”
“So if I was to ever try this again, she would have to be an absolute diamond.
“And I’m not talking about just looks. I’m talking about the kind of devotion to Robyn that I would never—and I’m getting really honest with you, here, just take the sex out completely.
“She would have to adore Robyn so much that I would never, ever have to worry about whether she was competing with Robyn for my love and affection.”
Folks on Instagram were not impressed with Kody’s declaration.
One said, “But he certainly didn’t require [Robyn] to adore the original 3!!”
Another asked, “Would Robyn have to adore her?”
Someone else joked, “She would have to be happy with me spending all my time with Robyn and giving us all her money!!”
A fourth person added, “Meri adored Robyn and that still didn’t work, aced the breakdown of his plural marriage and started questioning the fairness of polygamy.”
In January last year, Kody discussed his changed view on polygamy as he faced the breakdown of his multiple marriages.
Speaking to People, he explained that his realization of polygamy’s unfairness emerged from extensive reflection and discussions.
He stated, “There is not a disparity in fairness if there’s not a disparity in choice.”
Kody’s view altered only when his multiple marriages began to collapse.
Kody also discussed the choices his wives, Janelle, Meri, Christine, and even Robyn, had in staying or leaving the relationship.
He shared, “Janelle, Meri, Christine, even Robyn, have their choice whether they stay in this relationship or not.”
After they decided to leave, he accepted his life’s new direction.
Kody also confessed he once felt trapped in these relationships, but he always believed his wives had the freedom to leave.
