What’s happening in Iowa City this weekend? Enjoy a new music festival

It is a musical weekend in Iowa City with the inaugural Iowa City Songwriters Festival taking downtown. From concerts to poetry readings, the festival offers a wide range of events to explore, along with other happenings in Iowa City.  

Here are 5 things to do this weekend in Iowa City.  

Create and connect at Art and Write Night

Friday: Unleash your inner creative at Art and Write Night at the Museum of Natural History. The annual program series returns for the school year, every first Friday of each month. Happening from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5, guests will meet in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third Floor of Macbride Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Celebrate Iowa City’s songwriting community  

Saturday: A key event during the Iowa City Songwriters Festival, the Englert Theatre is teaming up with local organizations and artists for the “Collaboration, Community & Craft” panel. The free panel will start at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, in Iowa City Public Library. The Family Folk Machine and other Iowa City artists will share insights on building a musical community through collaboration and creativity.

Kick off spooky season at Public Space One   

Saturday: Public Space One’s “One of Us” brings together independent horror publishers and writers for a special reading. “One of Us” is free and open to the public from 12 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6.    

Live from the Northside, it’s Saturday night  

Saturday: The free weekly concert series is celebrating the Songwriters Festival with mars hojilla, an Illinois-based pop-rock band. The trio, fronted by Myles Evangelista, has made waves since debuting in 2022, with pop- and emo-inspired music. The group will take the outdoor stage on Linn Street from 6 to 8 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Savor seasonal flavors at the Taste of Heirloom Tomatoes  

Sunday: Heirloom tomato season is in full swing, and to celebrate the popular tomato variety, the Iowa City Master Gardeners are hosting the 10th annual Taste of Heirloom Tomatoes from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 7. Several tomato dishes will be available to sample on the east lawn of the Plum Grove Historical Home at 1030 Carroll St. Other highlights include a seed-saving demonstration, live music from Farrah Joan-Marie, and tours of the historic home of Iowa’s first \governor, Robert Lucas.  

The suggested donation is $4.
