While some legendary stars have given fans news about their health that they’ve been hoping for, fans of Tim Curry are getting news that while not bad, isn’t quite as good, more than a decade after suffering a devastating stroke in 2012.
The 79-year-old actor opened up about his condition during a special screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show celebrating the film’s 50th milestone.
And while other celebrities also share their devastating diagnoses with illnesses, Curry is remaining positive, even after he was forced to withdraw from live performances after the stroke left him confined to a wheelchair.
Following his medical emergency, Curry shifted his focus to voice acting work and lent his talents to projects like Fox’s 2016 animated version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – the 1975 musical that catapulted him to fame.
Addressing the crowd at LA’s Academy Museum, Tim shared, “I still can’t walk, which is why I’m in this silly chair, and that’s very limiting. So, I won’t be singing and I won’t be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg.”
Curry is most celebrated for his iconic portrayal of the eccentric scientist Dr Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The musical film also starred Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise, Dead Man Walking), Barry Bostwick (Megaforce, Spin City), Patricia Quinn (Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, The Lords of Salem), and Nell Campbell (Great Expectations, Shock Treatment).
The film and play became groundbreaking for their transgressive themes, iconic performances, and epic songs that took over modern popular culture.
Tim Curry went on to appear in other major roles, such as Pennywise the Clown in Stephen King’s IT, as well as featuring in Three Men in a Boat, The Wild Thornberries, and as every single villain on the cult TV cartoon Duckman, which starred Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander.
He also appeared as King Arthur in the 2005 Broadway production of Spamalot and recorded several albums in the 1970s and 80s, including Fearless and Read My Lips.
