Keira Knightley has been “spitballing” ideas for the upcoming Bend It Like Beckham sequel.
Gurinder Chadha, the director and co-writer of the 2002 sports comedy-drama, revealed in July that she is working on a sequel featuring the original characters, with the hope that Knightley, Parminder Nagra and their co-stars would return.
Addressing the sequel in an interview with British Vogue, the Pirates of the Caribbean actress shared that she was recently “spitballing” ideas with Simon Stone, the director of her movie, The Woman in Cabin 10.
“He was like, ‘Jules has got to be a coach now.’ I was like, ‘Right, but what’s happened to Jess?!’ He was like, ‘She’s the coach of the other team and they’ve got this rivalry going on.’ Simon does now want payment for that idea…” she said.
The original film ended with Nagra and Knightley’s characters Jess and Jules flying to the U.S. after being offered football scholarships at Santa Clara University in California. One subplot featured Jess’s mother thinking Jess and Jules were a couple.
When asked if she thought the characters could be in a relationship 25 years later, Knightley replied with a laugh, “We did think that at the time, we were like, ‘Obviously, we’re a couple’… And are they together (now)? Maybe they’ve split up and they get back together? I mean, who knows – 25 years is a long time, there’s so much that could have happened.”
The British actress has yet to officially sign on for the sequel. Chadha explained to Deadline in July that the cast wants to read the script before they commit to the project.
“I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back,” she shared. “Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.”
Chadha hopes to release the sequel in 2027 to coincide with the original’s 25th anniversary.
