It’s been a long time coming, but after a year of relative uncertainty, it’s finally been confirmed that Lioness, from EPs Jill Wagner and Taylor Sheridan, is coming back for a third season on Paramount Plus. According to Deadline, the long gap between the launch of Season 2 and confirmation of Season 3 was partially a result of the busy feature film schedules of stars Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña, who, in the interim, won an Oscar for her work in Emilia Perez.
While plot details for Season 3 are virtually non-existent, I get the feeling we won’t have to wait as long as we think, since production is scheduled to commence this month in Texas. It seems like the wait for Season 3 wasn’t so much a debate of “if,” but of “when,” and when it started to look like the pieces were lining up, Paramount pulled the trigger on pre-production before the renewal was official. That being said, it takes a long time to make a show, so we probably won’t be watching the show anytime soon, but, if the first two seasons are any indication, it will be worth the wait.
Lioness follows the exploits of undercover CIA assets who are sent to infiltrate the inner circle of notorious bad guys around the world, as well as their handlers on the ground (Zoe’s role) and their bosses in Washington DC (Nicole’s role). The first season followed Laysla De Oliveira on a mission to take down a terrorist leader, while Season 2 introduced Genesis Rodriguez as a new Lioness, tasked with infiltrating a cartel run by her own estranged family members. Season 3 will presumably feature a new Lioness and a new criminal empire, but, since De Oliveira was able to appear in Season 2, it will be interesting to see if the writers will find a way for her or Rodriguez to return for Season 3.
In addition to the undercover assets and their CIA bosses, the show also features a QRF (quick response force) of elite soldiers who serve as the “boots on the ground” in case things require a more direct style of intervention (i.e. shooting lots of people). The cast here includes LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, and Jill Wagner, who is actually the person who lit the creative fuse that sparked the show, inspired by stories her husband, himself a veteran of military intelligence, told her about the Lioness program. She bought the concept to Taylor Sheridan, and ‘bada-bing,’ they had a show… I’m sure it was more complicated than that, but that’s the quick-and-dirty TV Squad version of events!
Lioness is one of my favorite Paramount Plus TV series and I can’t wait to see what kind of high-tension adventure Taylor Sheridan and the cast manage to cook up for us. The series is currently without a release window, but I wouldn’t expect to see a trailer until sometime late next year.
