The long developing Highlander reboot is in that wonderful period where castings start to align, and production is so close you can taste it. Of course, that last bit would have happened sooner if it wasn’t for Henry Cavill’s recent and unfortunate injury forcing the shoot to postpone until next January. Still that’s more time to announce some A+ casting, and with Jeremy Irons now being added to the roster!
As you could guess, it sounds like he’s not exactly on the side of Cavill’s Connor MacLeod, as THR reported the legendary actor Highlander’s “second protagonist.” While he won’t be playing The Kurgen, as that’s Dave Bautista’s job, Irons role does have this description:
“…the leader of a secret order called The Watchers, who are keeping an eye on the immortals and see them as a threat to humanity.”
Specifying Jeremy Irons as a “protagonist” rather than a “villain” feels like a particularly powerful distinction. It doesn’t sound like he’ll be an out and out bad guy, but more of a rule-bound authority figure who disapproves of how Connor MacLeod and his mentor Ramirez (Russell Crowe) weave in and out of mortal history.
Of course fans of deep canon are probably smiling about now, as The Watchers were something introduced in Highlander: The Series. Adapting that concept into this new reboot shows that, at the very least, director Chad Stahelski’s variation on these themes will be open to reinterpreting the entire story so far.
In which case, the ultimate test for fans’ approval could be whether or not Highlander II: The Quickening is kept in the canon. (And if so, which version?) That’s a problem for another day though, as Jeremy Irons and the rest of the Highlander crew won’t start shooting until early 2026, for an unknown release date.
