The title is awkward but the box-office gross is likely to be awesome.
“Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” — a so far somewhat mysterious “film event” that accompanies the release of Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl” — is set to run Oct. 3-5 on multiple Memphis-area movie screens, including the impressive “Giant Screen Theater” inside the Pink Palace Museum & Mansion.
Running 89 minutes, “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” is described by Swift’s publicist as a mix of music videos, behind-the-scenes footage, Swift’s commentary on her new songs, and other material. The movie debuts Oct. 3, the same date as Swift’s “Showgirl,” which includes the Shakespeare-inspired track “The Fate of Ophelia,” which will be showcased in the film.
In the Memphis area, “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” will screen at Hollywood 20 and at the Malco Collierville, Cordova, Desoto, Forest Hill, Olive Branch, Paradiso and Stage cinemas.
It also will screen twice daily on the 50-foot-wide, 35-foot-high curved screen at the Pink Palace at 3050 Central.

According to the entertainment news site Deadline, “Showgirl” is expected to collect close to $35 million this weekend on some 3,500 screens, which likely would make it the top film at the box office. Deadline called the release “unprecedented,” due it its quick turnaround (the movie was announced only two weeks ago) and the fact that the film’s publicity campaign is essentially “the social media push of its star.”
Swift’s previous film, the 2023 concert movie “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” was similarly unconventional. Distributed without the support of a major studio, “The Eras Tour” earned $262 million in theaters.
