The Gist

  • Cozy movie night season is upon us.

  • Few writers do autumnal romance better than Nora Ephron.

  • Must-see rom-coms also include Mystic Pizza and Shakespeare in Love.

Do you smell that? It’s the unmistakable aroma of pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider, and various other warm drinks: in other words, it’s fall. And with the change of seasons comes a whole new menu of movies perfectly suited for a cozy night in on the couch. Perhaps you’re going through a break-up or on the verge of falling in love; either way, sometimes only an autumnal romance (or, for the light-hearted among us, an autumnal rom-com) will do.

From nostalgia-inducing early 2000s dramas to modern-day epics, here are all the love story films that capture the spirit of the season in two hours or less.

When Harry Met Sally

Few writers do autumnal romance better than Nora Ephron. In her iconic 1989 film When Harry Met Sally, Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) meet in a car ride from Chicago to New York; 10 years later, they reconnect in a book store and begin one of the most iconic relationships of all time. Three decades later, Ryan went to bat for the rom-com genre as embodied by When Harry Met Sally in an interview with Glamour.

“In the movies I did with Nora, the characters lead separate lives, but whatever was happening, they were destined to find one another,” she said. “There’s a comfort in the kismet and the idea of an inevitable connection. It’s a wonderland idea. It’s an enchanted idea.”

Mystic Pizza

Mystic Pizza is “love with the works.” Starring Julia Roberts as Daisy Araujo, the 1988 rom-com follows three women who work at a local pizza restaurant and dream of one day escaping their small fishing town of Mystic, Connecticut. The film was one of Roberts’s first; two years later, she sky-rocketed to fame opposite Richard Gere in Pretty Woman.

He’s Just Not That Into You

He’s Just Not That Into You represents the best (and, well, worst) of Y2K dating culture, making it the perfect millennial nostalgia watch for a cozy night in. Pair the plot with a star-studded cast (Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Scarlett Johansson, Ginnifer Goodwin, Drew Barrymore, and Justin Long) and this rom-com kinda can’t be beat.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Based on the James Baldwin novel of the same name, If Beale Street Could Talk is an early 1970s love story set in Harlem, New York. KiKi Layne and Stephan James star opposite one another as Tish Rivers and Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt; their plans for the future are soon derailed when the latter character is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Though the movie is fictional, Baldwin’s novel is believed to be inspired by the real life case of  William “Tony” Maynard, Jr., who was also falsely accused and incarcerated.

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook is a classic early 2010s rom-com starring Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany and Bradley Cooper as Pat Solatano. The unlikely duo meet after Pat is discharged from a mental institution; they wind up training for a dance competition together that Tiffany drags him into. In 2013, Lawrence won a Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film. She went on to work with director David O. Russell on two more projects: American Hustle and Joy.

You’ve Got Mail

Arguably Meg Ryan and Nora Ephron’s most iconic collaboration, You’ve Got Mail is probably responsible for untold numbers of women convincing themselves that they, too, needed to live in New York City. The movie follows Kathleen Kelly (Ryan), a struggling bookstore owner who strikes up a romance with a mystery man online. Kathleen eventually discovers that her new beau is Joe Fox (Tom Hanks), a.k.a. the owner of a corporate book chain poaching her customers from across the street. What happens next is delightful, surprising, and undeniably romantic.

The Age of Adaline

Blake Lively stars as Adaline Bowman in this romantic fantasy film that follows a woman who miraculously stops aging after a car accident in the 1930s. Adaline successfully avoids getting found out for eight whole decades until she meets—and falls in love with—philanthropist Ellis Jones.

Autumn in New York

Autumn in New York centers on a May-December romance between infamous bachelor Will Keane (Richard Gere) and terminally ill “free spirit” Charlotte Fielding (Winona Ryder). After the couple meet via Charlotte’s grandmother, the 21-year-old calls Will “fabulous,” jokingly adding, “I collect antiques.” Against all odds, their love story becomes one for the ages—pun very much intended.

09 of 10

Shakespeare in Love

Shakespeare in Love isn’t merely a period drama; it also happens to be the film that shot Gwyneth Paltrow to fame back in 1998. The movie is a fictional retelling of Shakespeare’s life while writing Romeo & Juliet, starring Joseph Fiennes as the playwright and Paltrow as his love interest, Viola De Lesseps. In March 1999, the film won a whopping seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Costume Design.

Dan in Real Life

Steve Carell stars as grieving single dad Dan Burns in Dan in Real Life whose meet-cute at a bookstore turns hilariously sour when he finds out that his new love interest is actually his brother’s girlfriend. Cue an onslaught of charming awkwardness from co-stars Juliette Binoche, Emily Blunt, and Dane Cook.
