Prince William reveals one surprising ‘change’ he’s going to make when he becomes King

Prince William has given a sneak peak into what it will look like when he becomes King of England – including one surprising change that’s on ‘his agenda’

The Prince of Wales, 45, is set for a rare TV appearance in tomorrow’s episode of The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy, where he will discuss everything from his wife Kate Middleton and father King Charles’ respective cancer battles to reminiscing over his childhood memories.

The special episode of the Apple TV+ show will see William show Canadian actor Eugene Levy around Windsor Castle, before the two go on a dog walk together with his pooch Orla and catch up over a pint at the pub.

William explained that becoming King is ‘not something he wakes up in the morning and thinks about,’ which of course makes sense, as it will sadly only be a reality after his father’s death.

However, he did give an insight into the kind of monarch he will be, admitting that change is ‘on his agenda’.

Levy asked: “You will, one day, be King of England. Do you think about that at all?”

To which the royal responded that being authentic, being himself and being genuine is ‘what drives him’ and then you can ‘attach whatever labels and kind of roles that come on top of that’.

William added: “But if I’m not true to myself and I’m not true to what I stand for and believe in then it kind of doesn’t really matter who you are. It gets lost.”

Then, delving into the process of his 12-year-old son Prince George one day becoming King, he added: “I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do and a world and a job that does impact people’s lives for the better.

“That is caveated with I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past that you know, Harry and I had to grow up in and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”

Levy then went on to guess that ‘it sounds like the monarchy will be shifting in a slightly different direction’ – and it looks like he’s right.

“I think it’s safe to say that change is on my agenda,” William said, “Change for good. And I embrace that and I enjoy that change. I don’t fear it.

“That’s the bit that excites me. The idea of being able to bring some change. Not overly radical change but changes that I think need to happen.”

Later in the episode, the Prince of Wales admitted he doesn’t feel ‘overwhelmed’ by the history behind his family and Windsor Castle.

He explained that ‘if you’re not careful, history can feel like a real anchor and weight around you’ and can lead to feelings of ‘suffocation and restriction’.

William said: “I think it’s important to live for the here and now. But also I think if you’re too intrinsically attached to history you can’t possibly have any flexibility because you worry that the chess pieces moved too much, and therefore no change will happen and I like a little bit of change.”

The future King added: “I want to question things more, that’s what I’m saying. I think it’s very important that tradition stays and tradition has a huge part of all of this.

“But there’s also points where you look at tradition and go is that fit for purpose today? Is that still the right thing to do? Are we still doing and having the most impact we could be having?”

The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy special episode premieres on Apple TV on Friday, 3 October.
