In 1947, a group of Hollywood actors founded the Committee for the First Amendment: a free-speech protest against politicians’ witch-hunt of suspected communists. Henry Fonda was one of its first members, and now his daughter Jane Fonda is relaunching it in 2025. “The federal government is once again engaged in a coordinated campaign to silence critics in the government, the media, the judiciary, academia, and the entertainment industry,” explained its relaunch statement. “We refuse to stand by and let that happen.”
Billie Eilish, Janelle Monae, Gracie Abrams and Barbra Streisand are among the musicians already signed up alongside hundreds of other entertainers and celebrities. The relaunch follows the recent controversy over late-night talk-show Jimmy Kimmel Live! being suspended from the airwaves under pressure from the White House and regulator the FCC.
Even more topically, the protest movement was revived on the same day a close ally of the US president issued a threat that ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] officials will be attending the Super Bowl for Bad Bunny’s half-time show, adding that “it’s so shameful they’ve decided to pick somebody who seems to hate America so much to represent them at the half-time show”.
