A beloved Sex and the City star recently spoke about the future of the franchise after the sequel series ended. The actor answered questions about whether Carrie Bradshaw’s story has truly ended. Best known for portraying the iconic columnist, she suggested the character could still return.
Sarah Jessica Parker teases Carrie’s potential return in future Sex and the City projects
Sarah Jessica Parker said on CBS Mornings that she is “not certain” the character’s story has ended, adding, “I could just be on hiatus.” Parker explained that showrunner Michael Patrick King decided to conclude the series, which ran for three seasons beginning in 2021.
“I think it’s out of respect for this really singular professional experience that you have to consider what you want to do, have you done it,” Parker said. “And sometimes it’s best to gracefully walk away when things feel really right and energetic, versus squeezing and exploiting people’s generosity and hospitality.”
She also reflected on the finale, stating, “I’m not certain I understand that decision means, because I could just be on hiatus.” King informed the cast in July before publicly announcing the decision to end the revival.
“And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” he said. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… Season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop” (via Deadline).
Parker has played Carrie since the 1998–2004 HBO series and two films. She thanked viewers, offering “the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt” as she bid farewell.
Parker also highlighted her SJP Lit imprint. She promoted Victoria Redel’s I Am You, a 1600s Amsterdam tale of artists Maria van Oosterwijck and Gerta Pieters. “The fact that these two women, the subjects of this extraordinary story, are in fact real people that very little is known about,” Parker said.
She praised Redel as “just incredibly skillful at taking fact and history and making this surprising, sensuous, atmospheric, dramatic, wholly unexpected story come to life.”
