1. FILM: Tron: Ares (Oct. 10)

The third instalment in the Tron series zeros in on a sophisticated program named Ares (played by Jared Leto), who leaves the digital world and enters the real world to complete a treacherous mission. The plot is framed as humankind’s first encounter with AI beings. Jeff Bridges reprises his role as computer programmer Kevin Flynn from the original 1982 movie and its 2010 followup, Tron: Legacy. Rounding out the cast are Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj and Gillian Anderson, among others. Nine Inch Nails is responsible for the soundtrack, which has 24 new tracks from the band.

2. TV: Victoria Beckham (Oct. 9, Netflix)

The Spice Girl turned fashion designer gets her own Netflix docuseries after appearing the 2023 one about her husband, former soccer player David Beckham. Victoria Beckham the docuseries unfolds in three parts and builds to a pivotal fashion show. Actress Eva Longoria and former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour make appearances and, naturally, so does David Beckham. In a promotional trailer, the fashion designer gets emotional while talking about her fight to prove herself. “I want my kids and David to be proud of me,” she says. “It’s taken so long to get to this point. I’m not gonna let it slip through my fingers again.”

3. MUSIC: The Life of a Showgirl (Oct. 3)

If mass destruction ever befalls this world, you could reasonably expect the last surviving artifacts to be cockroaches, Twinkies and Taylor Swift. The singer continues her pop culture dominance with this, her 12th studio album. Exploring Swift’s life as an entertainer, the record comprises 12 tracks, with Sabrina Carpenter lending vocals to the title song. The Fate of Ophelia draws on the death of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, and the song Elizabeth Taylor references the titular diamond-loving actress. Swift wrote and produced the album with Max Martin and Shellback — the same duo she worked with for her 2017 record, Reputation.

4. BOOK: Cat on the Road to Findout (Oct. 7)

This memoir from British singer-songwriter Yusuf/Cat Stevens is “a profound exploration of identity, faith, and the universal search for meaning,” says an official description. Among the key moments in his life, Stevens details three near-death experiences — battling tuberculosis, almost drowning in the ocean, and slipping off a rooftop. Stevens, 77, spoke about the latter with U.K. newspaper The Sun. “I already considered myself as a thinker by then and, as such, you can’t help thinking that one day you won’t be here,” he said. “Whether it’s through an accident or illness or by dying in your sleep, it’s all one thing. You leave this world.”

5. CELEBRATION: National Cinnamon Roll Day (Oct. 4)

Let’s take a moment to appreciate cinnamon rolls in all their glory. Delicately spiced flavouring, melt-in-your-mouth dough, generously drizzled icing — it’s no wonder that the Swedes and Finns created this day. Cinnamon rolls fit nicely in the Swedish tradition of fika, a daily coffee break with pastries and time to recharge among friends. But if you need an extra nudge to indulge in the treat, focus on its health benefits. Yes, there are a few. Cinnamon is packed with antioxidants, has potential anti-inflammatory properties, and can help protect against heart disease, among other things. The gooey dough and icing? Well, they’re just packed with vitamin yum.
