He’s not exactly a household name (at least, not yet), but Mattson Tomlin is the co-writer for The Batman: Part II, the highly anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Even though he’s a DC guy, Tomlin recently claimed on X that he’s trying to write a fourth film in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man universe, where Peter Parker is trying to balance life as a superhero with raising a family with Mary Jane. Considering the response from fans and even Kirsten Dunst herself, I think this is one film that Sony needs to invest in, rather than giving us another Spidey villain movie like Morbius or Kraven the Hunter.
If Tomlin had his way, this film (tentatively titled Spider-Man 4) would be directed by Sam Raimi and reunite Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst on the big screen. The movie’s plot would take a page out of Across the Spider-Verse and have a married Peter Parker raising a baby with Mary Jane Watson. But he’s still the amazing Spider-Man, so he must keep the city safe from supervillains while finding time to change the occasional diaper.
Crack That Thwip
So far, this movie is just a pipe dream of Mattson Tomlin, but he’s trying hard (both on social media and behind the scenes) to make Spider-Man 4 a reality. And, spurred on by Maguire suiting up again in Spider-Man: No Way Home, there’s a growing number of fans demanding to see this film become a reality. And the odds of that happening aren’t as crazy as you might think because of the high-profile people behind the original Raimi movies who support this idea.
For example, Kirsten Dunst recently appeared on The Supes Show and was asked if she’d like to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson for a fourth Spider-Man movie. She said that not only would she want to return but that she would want to explore a film where Mary Jane and Peter Parker are raising children together. That seems plausible enough (Maguire’s character confirmed in No Way Home that he and MJ are still together), and it’s perfectly in line with the film that Mattson Tomlin is so feverishly pitching.
He’s Something of a Fanboy Himself
As for original Spidey star Tobey Maguire, he admitted after Spider-Man: No Way Home that he had so much fun with this character and with these creators that he’d be happy just to hang out with them in any circumstance. Regarding the possibility of suiting up again for Spider-Man 4, Maguire gave an enthusiastic “yes” and gave the kind of answer fans love to hear. “Why wouldn’t I want to do that?”
Unsurprisingly, nobody from the original Spider-Man films seems quite so interested in creating a fourth film as director Sam Raimi. After Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, he said, “I love Tobey,” and “I love Kirsten Dunst,” and the idea of working with them again on another Spidey picture “sounds beautiful.”
He made it sound like the chief impediment at the time was that he didn’t “really have a story or a plan,” so I can only imagine he’d jump (or should that be webswing?) at Mattson Tomlin’s exciting pitch, one whose core idea (Peter Parker as Family-Man) is already being championed by Dunst.
Speaking as a fan, this really does seem like a no-brainer: the Maguire Spider-Man movies are still popular with multiple generations of fans, and his extended cameo was arguably the best thing about No Way Home. Plus, audiences loved seeing Peter B. Parker as a father figure in Across the Spider-Verse, so we know the core concept of Tomlin’s pitch resonates with fans. And Tomlinson is being trusted by James Gunn to help write the most anticipated DC movie since Superman, so I can only imagine Sony would jump at the chance for him to write a blockbuster Marvel movie.
Does Whatever a Spider-Fan Can
It’s easy to be cynical about Spider-Man 4’s chances, but remember: there’s no time like the present to go on social media and tell the world how much you want to see this movie. Both Sony and Disney could use a hit Marvel movie right now, and an army of vocal fans may be what it takes for them to pull out the director’s chair for Sam Raimi. Remember: if you don’t speak now, you’ll have to hold your peace when the next “Spider-Man” movie ends up being an origin film for Big Wheel!
