When it comes to Gilmore Girls, there’s no character more iconic than Emily Gilmore. Sure, some of that is the writing, but a lot of it is because of the delivery of Kelly Bishop, who is an icon in her own right.
Known for her extravagant taste and impeccable style (those Chanel suits!), we rarely saw a simpler side of Emily (except, of course, during A Year in the Life when she wore Lorelai’s “Candies” shirt). And while every actor pours a little bit of themselves into their character, according to Kelly, Emily’s approach to style and beauty is quite different from hers.
“Emily would’ve worn a full face of makeup and taken advice from a beauty expert who sold her expensive products,” the 81-year-old exclusively shared with Good Housekeeping during an interview celebrating the Gilmore Girls x Bliss skincare collab. “As I age, I’m as nice to my skin as I can be. I just want to be kind to my skin.”
So what does that look like? Well, Kelly shared some of the best secrets she’s learned over the years and rules she follows when it comes to her beauty routine. And we’re giving you the full rundown below!
Never go to bed with your makeup on.
“If there was one thing I absolutely was strict about, is to never go to bed with your makeup on,” she says. “Get it off, wash your face, or however you’re going to cleanse—it’s essential for healthy skin.”
Pay attention to the products you use.
Given how there are so many beauty brands with plenty of offerings, Kelly tries to take a look at what each product offers before she tries them out for herself.
“My skin used to be much more moist when I was younger,” she says. “Now, there are products out that I didn’t have 40 years ago. So, I’m really checking out products to make sure they’re good for older skin.”
Be proud of the skin you’re in.
“I think we’re getting better about accepting our aging, but it’s a slower process,” Kelly says. “Since I was a kid, it’s all been about beauty in the youth. When we’re younger, we think, ‘Oh, God—what’s going to happen?'”
But Kelly says you start to realize certain things as you age.
“As you start to get older, and you get a line—particularly if it’s a smile line—you start saying, you kind of like looking at that,” she adds. “I don’t worry about them as much.”
