With two self-distributed, blockbuster theatrical releases under her belt, Taylor Swift has established herself as a force to be reckoned with at the box office. Like The Eras Tour film before it, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl drew audiences to movie theaters in droves, but could it earn the pop star an Oscar nomination?

Swift’s most recent theatrical event was an unusual release, made up of interviews and lyric videos for songs off her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, but the centerpiece was the music video for the record’s first single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” as well as behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot.

In other words, Swift wrote and directed a short film, which was shot by her frequent collaborator and four-time-Oscar-nominated DP Rodrigo Prieto, and released it wide into theaters.

Is the next stop on Swift’s pop-cultural conquest the Academy Awards?

The proposition is intriguing, especially when considering that Swift previously campaigned with the video for her 10-minute version of “All Too Well.” So why couldn’t “The Fate of Ophelia” be considered for a Best Live-Action Short Academy Award?

At least for now, “The Fate of Ophelia” is not eligible according to the rulebook for the 98th Oscars. Whereas “All Too Well” qualified for Live-Action Short consideration because it screened at various festivals, “Ophelia” would be eligible due to the scale of its release.

“The picture must have been publicly exhibited for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in one of the six qualifying U.S. metro areas,” the rules read.

But an issue arises later in that very same sentence: “…for a theatrical qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days in the same commercial motion picture theater, during which screenings must occur at least one time daily.” And as the poster for The Official Release Party of a Showgirl make clear, it was a one-weekend-only event. Thus keeping Swift out of the Oscars hunt once again.

At least until her feature with Searchlight Pictures, if that ever happens.
