‘Holliday Hog’ evades would-be captors after standoff
The pig loose in Holliday Park escaped a close call with volunteers hoping to subdue him, scampering into the nearby woods.
A longtime Broad Ripple record store is expanding both its physical space and its presence in the community.
Indy CD and Vinyl will host a grand reopening Oct. 18 and 19 to unveil its new all-ages venue next-door to the Broad Ripple shop. The space, dubbed The 808 both for its street address of 808 Broad Ripple Ave. and the pitched drum machine that underscores rap and hip-hop music, will revive the business’ dormant tradition of hosting in-store performances.
The 808 is in the former location of Landsharks bar and nightclub, where a shooting left one dead and five others injured in March 2024. The bar permanently closed after the shooting, and the space has sat vacant ever since.
Indy CD and Vinyl owners Andy and Annie Skinner said they were “stunned and heartbroken” after what transpired next to their store, but they said the events spurred them into action.
“After processing the loss, we realized we had a responsibility,” the Skinners said in a press release. “We could either keep doing what we were doing — or we could step up and help redefine what this neighborhood could be.”
The 808 will revive Indy CD and Vinyl’s in-store shows, which faded about five years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic. Artists like Mumford and Sons, Death Cab for Cutie and Courtney Barnett previously took the stage, as did events from local nonprofits like Girls Rock and Musical Family Tree, the release said.
Annie Skinner said she hopes the space bolsters Broad Ripple’s arts scene, just as the record store has done for the 23 years the Skinners have owned it.
“It helps us bring more culture to the city,” Annie Skinner said. “More space for us to do the stuff we’ve always done, just better.”
The re-opening events will run during store hours, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
