Mary J. Blige is bringing her artistry to the big screen. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has announced the release of her first concert film, Mary J. Blige: For My Fans, which is set to hit theaters next month.
“Being able to share this moment globally with my fans, who can experience this together in a movie theater, is more special than I can put into words,” expressed the 54-year-old in a statement per the Associated Press. “This tour was always for my fans and being able to make this into a movie for them means the world.”
According to AP, the feature will highlight the singer’s storied career through multiple performances from each decade, behind-the-scenes footage, and surprise guest appearances. Parts of the film were recorded at her sold-out show this April at Madison Square Garden.
“Mary J. Blige has always represented the heart and soul of New York, and her Madison Square Garden performance reflects that,” added Kymberli Frueh, executive vice president of programming and content acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing, which will distribute the film, per AP. “We’re proud to share this historic hometown concert with audiences around the world through the magic of cinema.”
The official website indicates scheduled screenings are set to take place on Nov. 5th, 7th, and 8th.
“Playing at Madison Square Garden has always been a dream of mine,” Blige remarked earlier this year of the NYC performance, which was also livestreamed. “I mean, it’s every artist’s dream, but I grew up in the Bronx. This is my home. This moment really feels like a homecoming and a truly surreal moment. Playing for the crowd at MSG, and being able to amplify that through this partnership with Veeps, is a dream come true. I want everyone to grab their friends and throw a watch party. Sing and dance and have a blast — this one is all for my fans.”
