Travis Kelce Responds to Taylor Swift’s New Song “Wood”

Last Friday, when Taylor Swift dropped her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, she revealed to the world quite a lot about her relationship with fiancé Travis Kelce—perhaps even more than we ever thought we’d learn about the NFL tight end.

One of the most notable tracks in the album is “Wood,” a funky, sexy number in which Swift says she has finally given up on superstitions when it comes to love. And yes, the title does intentionally function as a double entendre. “Redwood tree, it ain’t hard to see/His love was the key that opened my thighs,” she sings. “I don’t need to catch the bouquet/To know a hard rock is on the way.”

So what did Kelce think about such a brazen song that seems to clearly… sing his praises? Well, that’s exactly what his brother Jason asked him on the latest episode of their podcast, New Heights.

“Do you feel… do you feel—not confident—do you feel cocky about the song ‘Wood’?” Jason asked his younger brother on the episode that came out this very morning.

“No,” Travis responded. “Any song that she references me in is very…”

But Jason cut him off: “That’s not just any song. This is a very specific you.” (The allusions to Kelce are pretty obvious, even down to the fact that Swift makes a reference to the New Heights podcast, which she was a guest in just a couple of months ago.)

Travis still tried to play it coy: “I love that girl, so what do you mean? Any song that she would reference me in that way…”

However, Jason didn’t back down, arguing that the song is clearly about an appendage—to which Travis joked: “I think you’re not understanding the song.”

“Jesus Christ. Travis, come on,” Jason said. “‘Redwood tree ain’t hard to see.’ I thought: Redwood? That’s a little bit—that’s a generous word, I think. I think if somebody wrote a song about me, it’d be like, ‘Japanese maple sometimes can see.’ I have more of an ornamental tree.”

The Kansas City Chiefs player wouldn’t let up though, simply calling the track a “great song,” to which Jason agreed. “The freaking beat to that song is fantastic and that’s right up my alley, so well done,” Jason said. “I think it’s a great song.”

There are a number of tracks on The Life of a Showgirl that seem to clearly be about Travis, from lead single “The Fate of Ophelia” to other tracks like “Opalite,” “Wi$h Li$t,” and “Honey.” However, none of them are quite as cheeky as “Wood.”

In the short film she released this past weekend, called The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, Swift tries to play the song off as something innocent. “What is the song about? Superstitions,” she says. “Um, very popular superstitions—knocking on wood, black cats, stepping on a crack… And things like that.”

Nice try, but she can’t fool us, or Jason Kelce.
