Five days ago, Grammy-winning country singer Zach Bryan posted a clip from an unreleased song on his Instagram, and people were normal about it.

No, of course, they weren’t.

More from Gold Derby

The song, which we have come to since learn is called “Bad News,” makes clear reference to the escalating tactics of the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“ICE is gonna come bust down your door,” the song goes. “Try to build a house, no one builds no more, well I got a telephone. Kids are all scared and all alone.”

Pretty clear, right?

Both sides of the political spectrum seemed to think so. The reaction from the left was generally celebratory to have a prominent artists in the usually conservative-friendly genre of country singing about over-aggressive federal policing wtactics and class struggles.

And many on the right, including representatives from DHS and the White House, were angered that Bryan — a veteran of the U.S. Navy — seemed to be criticizing the masked men brutalizing people in the streets of cities across America.

“I hope [Bryan] understands how completely disrespectful that song is, not just to law enforcement but to this country,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “To every single individual that has ever stood up and fought for our freedoms. He just compromised it all by putting out a product such as that — that attacks individuals who are just trying to make our streets safe.”

Once the song snippet reached the upper echelons of the federal government, Bryan finally commented on the reaction to the song, which he believed “misconstrued” the song and made him “not only embarrassed, but kind of scared.”

“This shows you how divisive a narrative can be when shoved down our throats through social media,” he wrote. “This song is about how much I love this country and everyone in it more than anything. When you hear the rest of the song, you will understand the full context that hits on both sides of the aisle.”

There’s no word on when the rest of “Bad News” will be made available, but until then we’ll have to wait to find out what’s just as bad as ICE busting down your door, but for the other side of the aisle.
