Spider-Man Homecoming introduced the character of Mac Gargan, AKA The Scorpion. However, despite a tease in the post-credits scene, Gargan never transformed into his super-powered alter ego, since the sequels went in a different direction, opting for more far-out threats than a street-level gangster in a scorpion-inspired mech suit.
The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks to dial things back, positioning Tom Holland’s webslinger for a street-level adventure alongside characters like Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Tombstone, played by Black Lightning’s Krondon. While plot details for Spidey 4 are being kept under wraps, a leaked set photo has revealed our first look at Michael Mando’s long-awaited return to the MCU.
The photo shows Mando, outdoors and wearing the same white prison getup he had in his final scene in Spider-Man Homecoming. It looks like he’s getting out of a vehicle, probably some kind of helicopter. With this in mind, the scene is likely either flashback or an indication that Gargan has been in prison since the events of Homecoming. Is he being transferred, or maybe someone’s busting him out of jail? Hmm, I wonder if he was turned to dust when Thanos snapped his fingers at the end of Avengers: Infinity War? If so, did his jail sentence get extended by five years when he returned, or was it considered time served? I feel like this should have been covered in an episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.
Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day feature Mac Gargan finally becoming The Scorpion? Will he team up with Tombstone and try to take over the criminal underworld of New York City? Will Mayor Kingpin somehow factor into all this? Will Spider-Man’s costume finally stop looking like a CGI cartoon even though they used a perfectly serviceable costume on set? We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the next MCU movie and is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
