Reneé Rapp doesn’t give a f—.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the self-assured 25-year-old pop star lit up Brooklyn’s Barclays Center bringing a fiery, attitude-packed (yet fun!) show to the 19,000-seat venue as part of her ongoing ‘Bite Me Tour.’
Rapp’s confidence is something her fans “Rappers” know all “Too Well” – whether making raunchy comments on podcasts, interviews, social media or well, through her song lyrics, she radiates an infectious, too-cool-for-school energy — and we can confirm the vocally-gifted songstress maintains that coolheaded poise while onstage.
The look she served for the evening was a healthy mix of rock ‘n roll with a touch of Y2K rebel vibes. Ripped black tights, knee high boots, dark-lined eyes, and crimped voluminous hair that she whipped back and forth all night Willow Smith-style paired well with the black-and-white checkered floor and pink tiered star platform stage. The whole display was very much giving a 2000s Avril Lavigne music video…and I wasn’t mad about it one bit.
Performance-wise, Reneé’s duality was on full display as she let her Broadway roots shine through. It’s easy to forget her career started on a Great White Way stage (remember “Mean Girls: The Musical” anyone?) before pivoting to pop, but the second you see her command a crowd with nothing but voice, presence and charisma, her theatrical chops are undeniable. She’s a born star.
Since she commanded the spotlight so much, there were no backup dancers accompanying her. The only players onstage were our headliner and the backing band. Still, the minimalist show didn’t feel like there was anything missing. When a performer is as magnetic as Rapp, everything else is distracting window dressing. Keeping it simple was the move and Reneé knows this better than anyone.
As for the music, let me just say the mic was ON. Even as the former Regina George tossed her hair and strutted across the stage, her vocals stayed crisp, powerful and dynamic, whether belting her single “Leave Me Alone” or stripping things down with a cover of Keyshia Cole’s go-for-broken epic “Love.” After singing the final note, the Gen Z artist urged her multigenerational fans to go home and look up the iconic tune if they didn’t know it already. I know I did. What a wallop (that Rapp did justice to).
Before draping herself across the piano for “That’s So Funny” midway through the concert, Rapp opened up about the song’s meaning: the heartbreak of a friendship breakup, which she admitted can cut even deeper than a romantic one. She then tied that track back to “Poison Poison,” a cut from her debut album “Snow Angel,” saying that that song captured the angry side of a friendship fallout, while “That’s So Funny” reflects a more grown, evolved perspective.
Later, when it came to describing her latest album “Bite Me,” Rapp put it best: she wanted a “sleazy, b—-y, aggressive pop album” — and that’s exactly what she delivered while seemingly still having a ball.
Final verdict: Seeing Reneé Rapp live — her energy, her vocals, singing along with a crowd full of die-hard “young ex-wives” — felt less like just a concert and more like a release.
Rapp will be back in NYC on Friday, Dec. 12 for a Jingle Ball concert at MSG with Ed Sheeran, Laufey, Zara Larsson and more.

Reneé Rapp new music
On Aug. 1, Rapp released her second studio album “Bite Me.”
The attitude-heavy effort gets underway with the brash yet bubblegum “Leave Me Alone” that we’d categorize as equal parts naughty, angsty and sugary sweet. Truth be told, we wouldn’t mind if the chilled-out refrain “Leave me alone, b—-, I wanna have fun” became part of the zeitgeist.
Other tracks to look out for here include the impassioned, angry ballad “Why Is She Still Here?,” breathy, light on its feet “Sometimes,” flippant, teasing “Kiss It Kiss It” and the surprisingly lo-fi, stripped-down “I Can’t Have You Around Anymore.”
We’re also partial to the ’90s alt-pop sounding “Shy,” breezy, bold “At Least I’m Hot” (that sounds like something Regina George would record) and the modest, minimalist “That’s So Funny” that builds to a showstopping vocal showcase.
