The guitarist cites the group has an abundance of material
Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash has offered a highly anticipated update on the band’s plans for a new studio album, confirming that the long-awaited record is in the works, despite the group’s famously spontaneous creative process.
In a recent interview with Guitar World, Slash addressed the status of the album, which would be the first full-length collection of new material featuring the reunited core of Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan since the Use Your Illusion era in the early ’90s.
“It’s coming,” the iconic guitarist stated. “I know it’s coming because everybody is thinking about it.”
Slash revealed that the band currently possesses a substantial backlog of new material, stating, “There’s so much material at this point — it’s a matter of having the discipline to sit down and fucking get into it.” He also shed light on the band’s unique, often unpredictable approach to recording.
“The thing with Guns is, in my experience, you can never plan ahead,” he explained. “You can never sit down and go, ‘We’re going to take this time, and we’re going to do this.’ Every time we’ve done that, it falls apart.” He emphasized that their best work emerges spontaneously: “It just spontaneously happens through some sort of inspiration that triggers it. And the next thing you know, it’s off and running.”
While the band has previously released four tracks in the wake of their 2016 reunion—”Absurd,” “Hard Skool,” “Perhaps,” and “The General,” which were reworked tracks from the Chinese Democracy era—fans have been eagerly awaiting a full new album.
Slash’s latest comments serve as the most definitive assurance yet that a new LP is a collective goal for the band. Although no timeline or official release date has been set, the message is clear: the next chapter of Guns N’ Roses’ history is a question of “when” rather than “if.”
The band remains focused on their current endeavors, which include extensive touring, but with “everyone… thinking about it,” the momentum for a new studio record continues to build.
