Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a seemingly awkward exchange at a charity event this week – but quickly shut down any rumors of tension in a sweet video posted on social media.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were crowned Humanitarians of the Year at a gala organized by Project Healthy Minds in New York and were praised for their efforts to build a safer and more equitable future for families and young people around the world.
Fans were excited to see the couple, who have been married since 2018, step out in NYC together – and many said they looked “unbothered” by their critics.
However, while attending the event, viewers noticed that the Sussexes seemed to have an awkward exchange as they posed on the red carpet for photographs before Harry pulled his wife’s hand to get her to continue.
The prince appeared to be telling Meghan to “come on now” and keep moving. In another awkward exchange noted by critics, Harry was speaking to a member of the event team while Meghan stood waiting.
The pair’s charity and philanthropic efforts were celebrated at the awards. Meghan was praised as “a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and philanthropist” as she received the award.
Alongside her, Harry was also praised, with his work with mental health companies and his controversial 2023 memoir Spare listed among his achievements.
Accepting the award, Harry and Meghan cited a study from advocacy group ParentsTogether that found researchers posing as children experienced harmful interactions every five minutes they spent with an artificial intelligence chatbot.
Harry said, “This wasn’t content created by a third party. These were the companies’ own chatbots working to advance their own depraved internal policies. But here’s what gives us hope: these families aren’t facing this alone.”
The Sussexes also announced that their foundation’s Parents Network would join forces with ParentsTogether in an effort to continue helping families fight for online safety.
The couple have made youth mental health a cornerstone of their philanthropic work since launching the Archewell Foundation in 2020 after stepping down as working royals.
Through its community of families who have experienced online harm and support for youth-led organizations shaping responsible technology, the nonprofit works to make digital spaces safer.
Their push has since expanded to not just stress social media’s harms but highlight platforms’ design features that they blame for amplify damaging content.
