The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola paid tribute to Diane Keaton Sunday following news of the legendary actress’ death.
“Words can’t express the wonder and talent of Diane Keaton. Endlessly intelligent, so beautiful,” the filmmaker wrote of the actress who portrayed Kay Adams in the Godfather saga.

“From her earliest performances in ‘Hair’ and throughout her amazing career, she was an extraordinary actor. I saw her in the film ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ and knew I had to have her play Kay in The Godfather, (which she told me she based on my wife Ellie) and her wonderful work in ‘Annie Hall’ while simultaneously setting a new fashion trend. Everything about Diane was creativity personified.”
Jane Fonda, Steve Martin, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mandy Moore were among Keaton’s Hollywood peers and co-stars to remember the Oscar-winning actress following news of her death Saturday at the age of 79, while Keaton’s First Wives Club co-stars Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn also paid tribute.

Diane Keaton lived inside them,” the Academy — which awarded a Best Actress Oscar to Keaton for Annie Hall — wrote on social media. “Diane Keaton embodied the contradictions of being human: funny and fragile, bright and bruised, always achingly honest. For decades, she filled every frame with warmth, wit, and wonder. A Best Actress Oscar winner and four-time nominee, her presence shaped generations of storytelling. Her spirit will live forever on screen, and in the hearts of all who saw themselves in her.”
