A Royal expert has issued a warning to Prince Harry, stating that the repeated setbacks faced by his African charities should serve as a “wake-up” call.
Earlier this year, the Duke of Sussex stepped down from Sentebale, a charity he co-founded to aid children impacted by AIDS in Botswana and Lesotho, following a public disagreement with its chairwoman, Dr Sophie Chandauka. She accused him of bullying and harassment, allegations which he denied.
Recently, it was disclosed that an African wildlife charity associated with Prince Harry lost its rights to manage major animal reserves in Chad due to a decision made by the country’s government.
The non-profit organization, where Prince Harry is a board member and was formerly president, announced on Tuesday that the government of Chad has officially ended its agreements permitting the charity to oversee wildlife reserves in the nation.
A minister from Chad stated in a release that the charity had demonstrated “a recurring indelicate and disrespectful attitude toward the government.”
Bond continued, “I think he has probably now learned that setting up charities and managing them successfully is a complex business. And, through no fault of his own, Harry doesn’t have much experience of running a business.”
African Parks, which manages 22 national parks and protected areas across 12 countries, includes two significant wildlife reserves in Chad: the Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve and the Greater Zakouma Ecosystem. These encompass the Zakouma and Siniaka-Minia national parks.
In response to Chad severing ties, African Parks stated it is engaging in discussions to “better understand the government’s position” and “explore the best way forward to support the continued protection of these critical landscapes.”
The charity further noted, “African Parks will continue to keep its partners and stakeholders informed, as further clarity is obtained.”
Ms Bond suggested, “Perhaps Harry would be better advised in future to use his platform, and it is a powerful and influential platform, to support established charities and causes he believes in – without getting involved in their management.
She concluded, “He already does that with the WellChild Awards, and his attendance is hugely valuable in every way. Having said that, his Invictus Games are an undoubted success and go from strength to strength. So he must be doing something right!”
