Diane Keaton lived as a recluse in the final few months before she died aged 79, after her health “declined very suddenly,” sources have said.

The Hollywood icon, celebrated for her performances in The Godfather, Annie Hall and Father of the Bride, passed away in California. A relative revealed she was surrounded by her loved ones – but no additional details regarding her death were confirmed.

Diane was transported from her Los Angeles-area residence by ambulance on Saturday and was subsequently pronounced dead, with the 911 audio disclosing there was a “person down.” The news emerges as Al Pacino reveals biggest regret he had before ex Diane Keaton’s death.

Since word of her passing surfaced, numerous celebrities have offered tributes to Diane, with sources indicating Woody Allen feels extremely distraught and surprised and upset.

Diane was last spotted publicly at Beverly Hills eatery Mr Chow more than a year ago. During that visit, she joined an exclusive dinner organized by fashion designer Thom Browne and Saks Fifth Avenue.

The performer, wearing a stylish check trouser suit, wide buckle belt and black suede Fedora, lifted a celebratory glass while posing for photographs alongside Thom. She had earlier joined New York Fashion Week in September 2023 as Ralph Lauren presented its newest collection at Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The next day, she was observed attending the US Open as she supported American tennis player Coco Gauff. Diane, a beloved figure, had been keeping a low profile in recent times, with her last social media post dating back to April when she celebrated National Pet Day with her dog.

A friend revealed to the Daily Mail about Diane’s sudden decline, stating, “She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”

During her final months, only her immediate family were by her side, maintaining a high level of privacy, reports the Mirror US. Even her closest friends were kept in the dark about her condition. In the lead-up to her passing, Diane’s cherished Brentwood home was listed for sale at a whopping $29 million.

An insider shared with People, “She lived in Brentwood for many years. “She loved her neighborhood. Up until just a few months ago, she’d walk her dog every day.

“She was usually dressed the same, with a hat and her signature sunglasses regardless of the weather.” The source further added, “She was always very nice, funny and chatty.

“She’d talk to her dog like he was a person. She was eccentric and had this old-school Hollywood aura. She was very, very special.” Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Diane moved to Manhattan to chase her dreams of acting. Her career kicked off on Broadway as part of the original cast of the 1968 musical Hair.

She later earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in Woody Allen’s 1969 stage play Play It Again, Sam.

She then transitioned into film acting. Her first significant role was as Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary 1970 gangster film The Godfather, where she starred alongside Al Pacino and Marlon Brando.

Her final role was in the 2024 comedy Summer Camp. She frequently worked with writer-director Woody, appearing in eight of his films between 1972 and 1993.

Throughout her career, Diane featured in a multitude of films, including Father of the Bride, The Family Stone, Book Club, and Because I Said So, among many others. The First Wives Club, which also starred Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, has become a cult classic and is a fan favorite.

She also directed the films Unstrung Heroes and Hanging Up, as well as the documentary Heaven.
