Before you jump into the next round of the martial arts fantasy franchise, Mortal Kombat, thinking it’s the end of this universe, Warner Bros. has an update for you: the studio has officially kicked off the next chapter of the franchise.
Ahead of the theatrical premiere of Mortal Kombat II, slated for May 15, Jeremy Slater – who wrote Mortal Kombat II – announced at New York Comic Con that he will return to write the upcoming Mortal Kombat 3. He said, “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy and excited with this movie. They are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they already hired me to start writing the next installment of ‘Mortal Kombat.’” (via Variety)
Details about the third film are still thin, but it will surely feature more action from Johnny Cage.
Based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, the Mortal Kombat series follows intense tournaments between champions of Earthrealm and the chaotic Outworld. These battles pit fighters such as Cole Young, Sonya Blade, Kano, Jax, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao against baddies like Mileena, Nitara, Reiko, Kabal, Reptile, Goro, and the sorcerer Shang Tsung.
The second film, Mortal Kombat II, sees the return of Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, and others, along with new additions Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford.
