GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Baltimore Street was filled with dirt and green screens were set up over the weekend for a film production.

‘Gettysburg 1863’ follows the story of a family, a mother and three daughters, and a father who’s away fighting in the war.

“The story it opens in 1861,” Brinkman says. “Our lead actors say goodbye. They think it’s going to be over quick and they’ll see each other soon and we pick up the first battle, 1863.”

The Daniel Lady Farm was used as a Confederate camp and aid station in 1863. Tents have been pitched to reenact that for the movie. Facilities Manager Chris Jones helped to coordinate reenactors, costumes, and more.

“The male lead, I got to loan him one of my uniforms, which was pretty cool and then it was getting a cavalry unit, and then it was getting horse drawn carriages and wagons and all of that equine activity,” Jones says

The Gettysburg Film Commission, Gettysburg History, and Borough of Gettysburg also helped bring the vision to life.

The farm is one of four locations that were used to film over the weekend. Flohr’s Church Cemetery was used for the Gettysburg Address scene. Sachs Covered Bridge was also a part of the production, along with the Shriver House Museum.

Museum director Abbie Hoffman says the film pays homage to the story the Shriver House Museum tells, which is also that of a family who lived in Gettysburg during the Civil War.

“We got to see soldiers and cannon and debris of battle, just like the Shriver’s would have seen 160 some years ago,” Hoffman says.

Hoffman hopes the film will lead more people to sign up for tours of the museum. Mary Grace Kauffman with Destination Gettysburg says previous productions have boosted tourism. Tickets were sold for people to watch this production in person.

“The film is doing a great job of telling the Gettysburg story in a new way and telling folks about the history and inspiring them to want to come and experience it in person,” Kauffman says. “What’s unique is some of the places that are in the film, I mean, these are places that you can visit yourself.”

Jones says the film could also help the reenactment community.

“The reenactment community has been going downhill, just in the numbers sense, guys are getting older,” Jones says. “They can’t do it anymore, sleeping on the ground takes a lot out of your body, so getting a newer generation interested in reenacting, and this is where we hold the Gettysburg reenactment every year, here at the farm, so that’s a huge, huge plus.”

The goal is for the film to be released for Remembrance Day 2026.

The Gettysburg Christmas Film was previously released locally. It will be available on platforms like Amazon Prime and DirectTV in November.

“I came here in ’92 to do the movie Gettysburg, and I fell in love with the town and the history, and I’ve been coming back ever since,” Brinkman says. “Gettysburg is special, and out of all the other towns in this country, because people are still living the history and they’re passionate about the history.”

Brinkman says he sent the script to the Borough of Gettysburg before getting permitting approvals. The borough helped secure permit approvals on the state road.

“PennDOT had a few extra questions, obviously, because we’re shutting the road down, not for just one day, but five, essentially five, we’re doing things on the road that are atypical, usually we shut the road down for a parade, but that doesn’t require putting up green screens and scaffolding and dirt,” says Borough Manager Charles Gable. “Our public works crew took the meter heads off, made them look like hitching posts for horses back in the day.”

Green screens will help eliminate modern day items like air conditioning units.

Gable says the street was still open to pedestrians, which was important for those who needed to access the medical facility near the film set.
