The most unique music event in Athens doesn’t require a ticket, wristband or reservation. Scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, Porchfest will turn seven historic Athens neighborhoods into music venues as more than 200 local artists perform in front of houses, churches, and businesses to spotlight the city’s timeless architecture and creative community. But what is Porchfest, and how does it work?
Where is Porchfest happening?
Porchfests have been going on across the United States and Canada since 2007, and 2025 marks the seventh year for Athens. Instead of having one or two stages set up in a central location downtown, Porchfest is spread across the areas of Boulevard, Buena Vista Heights, Cobbham, Newtown, Normaltown, Pulaski Heights and Reese-Hancock. Admission is free, every performance takes place outdoors, and many different styles of music are involved.

Where do I park for Porchfest?
Porchfest is designed as a sidewalk event, so attendees are encouraged to park on the outskirts of each neighborhood and walk, bike, or use the Historic Athens trolley service to access the streets where live music will be happening. Since the concerts take place outdoors, it’s best to treat Porchfest the same way you would any outdoor event. Wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes, and bring a blanket or chair if you plan to hang out for a while.
What time are the bands playing?
The performances for Porchfest begin at noon and last until 8 p.m., so it’s best to plan according to which neighborhood you’d like to visit first or what kind of music you’re interested in hearing. For example, there are 10 different acts scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Boulevard neighborhood, so you can follow your ear once you get there or use this handy guide to see where and when each band is playing.
What kinds of music does Porchfest have?
Porchfest is the best way to experience all that Athens has to offer in terms of live music. Styles like acoustic singer-songwriters, folk, indie rock, and country are to be expected because they more easily translate to setting up on a porch or lawn, but Porchfest also includes such categories as classical, jazz, R&B, hip hop, and electronic music. To make it easier, Historic Athens’ band guide lets you search by genre and neighborhood.
