A new Nick Cave documentary, which will explore his “enduring influence and unique impact”, has been announced.
The Veiled World Of Nick Cave, which is set to air on Sky Documentaries later this year, will see the likes of Florence Welch, Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood and Warren Ellis, discuss how working with Cave has “transformed their own creative lives, examining the archetypal figures woven through his work, his artistic courage and singular impact”, for the one-off special.
Irvine Welsh, designer Bella Freud and filmmaker Wim Wenders will also discuss his influence on their own creative work.
Phil Edgar-Jones OBE, Executive Director of Unscripted Originals at Sky, said of the documentary in a statement: “Nick Cave is one of those incomparable artists whose power of storytelling knows no bounds. His vivid landscapes are brought to life through his lyrics, his books, his music and his ceramics. We’re delighted to be lifting the lid on his brilliantly multi-layered world in this special.”
Further details about his forthcoming television adaptation of The Death Of Bunny Munro have also been revealed.
The series was officially announced by Sky in August, and will come as a new adaptation of Cave’s second novel, which was published in 2009 and followed on from his 1989 debut, And The Ass Saw The Angel.
The six-part series will see Matt Smith (House Of The Dragon, The Crown) star in the titular role.
A synopsis reads: “Following his wife Libby’s death by suicide, sex addicted door-to-door beauty salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro (Matt Smith), finds himself saddled with his young son, Bunny Junior, and only a loose concept of parenting.
“As the two struggle to contain their grief in wildly different ways, Bunny takes Junior on the road for an increasingly out-of-control door-to-door sales tour around Brighton and the surrounding coast.”
Cave and Warren Ellis will also score the new series, and there will be a special preview event for The Death Of Bunny Munro taking place at the Royal Festival Hall in London on October 30, featuring a screening of the first two episodes, followed by an exclusive on-stage conversation with Cave and lead actor Smith.
News that Cave was joining up with Ellis to work on the score was first shared in September last year, when NME asked the latter if he was involved in the project. “Yes, we are. I don’t know if I’m meant to say that,” Ellis said. “Nick’s been involved in overseeing it in some capacity, just looking on. We are doing the music for it. That might be the chance for a bit of the old Grinderman, maybe!”
