“General Hospital” star Kirsten Storms is preparing to undergo brain surgery.
Storms, 41, who has played Maxie Jones on the soap opera since 2005, opened up about her recent medical crisis on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
In a lengthy Instagram statement, Storms revealed that doctors found “an aneurysm on the right side of [her] brain” during a January scan.
“I had a procedure done that weekend … [but] because of the *slightly* complex situation with the aneurysm (nothing bad, just not typical) it wasn’t coiled that weekend,” she wrote.
Storms is now preparing to undergo a coiling, a minimally invasive procedure used to treat brain aneurysms, in the next couple of weeks. A brain aneurysm is a bugle in a blood vessel of the brain. If left untreated, aneurysms can rupture and become life-threatening.
“Since I knew what an aneurysm was, the scan in January majorly freaked me out,” Storms captioned her Instagram statement. “A few days after I was discharged from the hospital, someone created a blog post that said I was in the hospital that weekend because I tried to ‘unalive’ myself. I couldn’t understand why a person would make up something that terrible, when they had no idea why I was really there. There are a few really bad apples out there.”
Storms previously had a cyst removed from her brain in 2021. The aneurysm was discovered during a follow-up scan.

“Aneurysms (obviously) can be caused by stress. Brain cysts? I believe that is possible too … and since the January scan showed a new, but *very small,* “squatter” (aka cyst) on my brain stem — it was clear I needed to change some things in my life asap,” the actress wrote.
Back in July, Storms announced that she’d be taking a temporary hiatus from “General Hospital.” She cited her move to Nashville with her 11-year-old daughter, Harper, as the reason for the break.
“For my own personal reasons, no longer living in Los Angeles was very important to me,” Storms wrote on Tuesday. “The biggest reason for the move was Harper, but a lot of it was for my physical and mental health. And my overall happiness.”
Storms previously told fans she’d be back on “General Hospital” in November or December, but her return date has not yet been confirmed.
“General Hospital” airs on ABC weekdays at 3 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Hulu the day after they air.
