Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters took the world by storm and created a massive viewership record for the streaming service. It not only became the most-watched Netflix movie of all time, but it also beat Squid Game to become the streamer’s most-watched title ever. At this point, it is not a film anymore; it is a cultural phenomenon, and what makes the title truly shine is its choice of storytelling through animation.
It made viewers realise that not every story needs a live-action adaptation, and that’s why Maggie Kang, the creator of KPop Demon Hunters, has made it clear that there are no plans for a live-action version of the film.
Speaking to the BBC, Kang opened up about the universal acclaim garnered by KPop Demon Hunters and if she has plans to continue the story of Huntrix in future projects. She knows that fans have been demanding a real-world version of the movie, but she believes it wouldn’t capture the essence of the story like the animated one did. Kang said, “There are so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation. It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So, totally it wouldn’t work for me.”
Co-director Chris Appelhans agreed with her stance and noted that a live-action version of the film is not on the cards. “The joy of animation is how far you can push and elevate what’s possible. I remember they adapted a lot of different animes and oftentimes, it just feels a little stilted,” said Appelhans.
KPop Demon Hunters became a worldwide sensation upon its release and garnered positive reviews across the globe. It is one of the rare projects that masterfully blends Korean culture and mythology, creating a story that resonates with viewers on a personal level.
Moreover, it explores the themes of identity, empowerment, and sisterhood, showcasing how unity can help in overcoming darkness. For some, it might just be a movie, but for its creators and millions of fans, KPop Demon Hunters demonstrates the power of storytelling.
