Ryan Guzman tells PEOPLE how he found out Mark Consuelos was guest-starring on 9-1-1
The actor shares his hilarious reaction to realizing he was about to rescue the talk show host’s character from being swallowed by a whale
Guzman also shares what’s next for Eddie as 9-1-1 season 9 continues
Ryan Guzman got quite the surprise when he was shooting the season 9 premiere of 9-1-1.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Guzman, 38, revealed he had no idea Mark Consuelos was appearing on the show until he showed up to film their pivotal scene in the premiere.
9-1-1 kicked off season 9 by having Consuelos’ billionaire character Tripp Hauser get swallowed by a whale. Thanks to some quick-thinking from Station 118, the whale spit Tripp out, but Guzman’s Eddie still had to jump into the water to save him.
That’s where things got interesting for Guzman, who had no idea the LIVE with Kelly and Mark co-host was guest-starring on the show until he spotted him in the water.

“Actually, funny enough, I didn’t know that it was going to be Mark Consuelos for that role up until the day I was jumping in the water and saving him,” Guzman tells PEOPLE. “I just happened to be on the pier, I’m looking down, I’m like, ‘God, that guy looks familiar.’ “
The Boy Next Door actor continues, “I started looking around, I’m like, ‘Does anybody know why that guy looks so familiar?’ And then finally, it clicked, I go, ‘Holy s—! I’m saving Mark Consuelos.’ “
In a separate interview with PEOPLE, Consuelos, 54, recalled the surreal moment of meeting his scene partner right before they hopped into the water.
“It was so cool because I mean, we were both looking at each other. He’s on shore. I’m in this kayak. I have to get in the water — I wouldn’t say it’s the cleanest water in the harbor of Long Beach — and we’re both staring at each other. I’m like, ‘Hey man, I’m Mark.’ He goes, ‘Hey, I’m Ryan.’ I’m like, ‘All right, we’re going to get in this water?’ ” he says.

Consuelos adds that they “got in the water and he came and he dragged me and we shared a laugh, like this is a really funny way to meet.”
As for Guzman, he has nothing but nice things to say about working with Consuelos, noting that the actor is “such a down-to-earth individual and just a pleasure to work with.”
While 9-1-1 is kicking off the season by going to space, Guzman is looking forward to viewers getting to see a new side to Eddie as the season continues. It’s been a rough road for the fireman, but it seems Eddie is finally catching a break this year as he partners up with Aisha Hinds‘ paramedic Hen and starts a new chapter in his journey.
“I love me some Aisha time,” Guzman says with a laugh. “I’m Hen’s new work husband. It’s a new role for Eddie. He’s no longer the action guy with Buck. Now, he’s a paramedic and he’s handling more of the medical stuff. I love it … I asked for a little bit more responsibility from [showrunner] Tim Minear this year, and boy, did he give it to me with all the medical jargon.”

Guzman is also looking forward to showing a “lighter side” to Eddie after he’s dealt with mental health struggles and grief in recent seasons. “I’m really enjoying not being so dark,” he shares.
“I get to have more scenes with Aisha and more scenes with Kenny [Kenneth Choi] … and it offers levity within certain settings of our show. Yeah, I’m so excited to showcase the funner side of Eddie this year.”
