The Foo Fighters appear to be soaring towards a new era. The veteran band that just finished a run of Asian dates with new drummer Ilan Rubin teased their next chapter on Thursday night (Oct. 16) with a 27-second teaser of what appears to be an untitled, rocking new song. The tune launches with one of the group’s patented wide-open, fist-pumping riffs before dive-bombing into a double-time section with pounding drums and relentless, climbing guitars.

The song is not named and no other information about it was available at press time, but the Instagram post was accompanied by a cryptic caption, “About to take flight…” as well as the image of a colorful bird sitting on an amp with the FF logo in the back. Eagle-eyed fans speculated that the yellow, blue and green bird might have been a tease of upcoming dates in Brazil.

At press time, however, the band has only two more dates on its 2025 roster: a pair of shows in Mexico on Nov. 12 — in Monterrey — and Nov. 14 at Corona Capital in Mexico City. Last month, the band posted a goofy teaser video that ended with the phrase, “Stay tuned… there’s more to come!” following a jokey AI-enhanced clip in which Rubin appears to have 10 arms and lead singer/founder Dave Grohl has extra fingers on his left hand, leading fans to speculate that there are more shows on the horizon.

At press time no other information was available about the unnamed song and whether it is a one-off single or the initial taste of the follow-up to their 11th album, 2023’s But Here We Are, their first LP following the March 2022 death of beloved drummer Taylor Hawkins. Earlier this month, the Foos released the Are Playing Where ???? Vol. 1, a Bandcamp exclusive EP that captured six performances from a string of four underplay club shows the band played in September in California, Washington, D.C. and Connecticut.

So far this year the Foos have also released the nostalgic one-off single “Today’s Song” and a blistering cover of Minor Threat’s “I Don’t Wanna Hear It.”

The recent string of shows featured the debut of new drummer Rubin, the former Nine Inch Nails timekeeper who joined the group this summer after the Foos parted ways with journeyman drummer Josh Freese, who held the seat for nearly two years in the wake of Hawkins’ death. In a rare rock swap, Freese then returned to his old seat drumming for NIN.
